100 years of Takaokaya and the creation of KanguHi everyone! We are Takaokaya’s team global.
As the first official post of the Kutsurogi journal, it seems fitting if the topic of Kangu be the main in this journal.Takaokaya has been a family-run business since the beginning. Back in 2019, Takaokaya celebrated its 100th year since its founding. Takaoka Futon Co., Ltd.’s CEO Koichiro Takaoka, the grandson of the Tokutaro Takaoka, who first started the business, created the concept of Kangu.Kangu or 寛具 (かんぐ) is a Japanese word that was created to represent Takaokaya’s products. The kanji character 寛 is from the word 寛ぎ(くつろぎ – kutsurogi)which means, to feel relax or to feel at ease. The desire to convey this feeling to the customers is the core value of Takaokaya. The kanji character 具 is taken from 道具 (どうぐ – dougu), used to refer to tool or instrument. The character 具 itself carries the meaning of a tool or utensil. Combined forming the word 寛具 (かんぐ) that generally means relaxation tool.

With kangu, Takaokaya does not only hope that every customer that comes across it will find relaxation but, to preserve this century-old art form of using traditional techniques to create various relaxing products, to bring joy for another 100 years and beyond.
